PDE 5 Inhibitors may assist brain tumor treatment

According to the results of the study conducted in 2010, the oral medications for treatment of ED in men such as Cialis, Levitra and Viagra may back the brain tumor treatment effectiveness.

The supposition was supported by the data of the animal study involving mice with brain tumors tied to both lung and breast cancer. According to the study erectile dysfunction medications such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra) can empower the chemotherapy medication Herceptin to enter the blood-brain barrier (BBB). BBB separates the blood circulating in the body from the brain extracellular fluid (BECF). BBB naturally protects the brain from dangerous compounds thus making it hard for medications to enter into the brain. The cancer treatment must come through BBB to fight the cancer that has spread to the brain.

BBB obstructs the distribution of cancer treatment medication, especially such drug as Herceptin characterized by large-molecule formulation which makes it hard to penetrate the BBB. The researches supposed that erectile dysfunction drugs can increase the ability of the cancer medications to go through the brain barrier.

In treatment of brain cancers the difficulty is in the ability of the medications to reach the target – the tumor in the brain. When there are potent drugs which can help to fight the disease but there is no way of how to deliver these drugs to the brain, the possibility of using ED oral medications should be carefully considered as a solution.

The tested mice who had received ED medications have demonstrated 20% more survival cases that the mice that had not received Cialis online with Herceptin.

The amount of Herceptin that was able to get to brain tumors has doubled in mice who were administered ED medications in comparison with mice who were administered only Herceptin.
